Story behind the song
A buckyball or fullerene, is a molecule composed of carbon ( C60 ), in the shape of a hollow sphere, tube or ellipsoid . Spherical fullerenes are also called buckyballs and resemble soccer balls. The first fullerene discovered was in 1985 by Richard Smalley, Robert Curl, James Heath, Sean O'Brien, and Harold Kroto at Rice University. The name was an homage to Buckminster Fuller, a noted architectural modeler who popularized the geodesic dome .The structure was also identified five years earlier by Sumio Iijima, from an electron microscope image, where it formed the core of a "bucky onion." Fullerenes have been found to occur in nature. More recently, fullerenes have been detected in outer space. According to astronomer Letizia Stanghellini, "Its possible that buckyballs from outer space provided seeds for life on Earth that originated outside the solar system and traveled in/on meteors. Research lends support to the idea that organic molecules from space have played a role in starting the chemical processes necessary for the origin of life. The researchers also isolated fullerenes from a clay sediment layer deposited during an asteroid impact 65 million years ago that scientists believe was the collision, marking the so-called Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary, that led to the demise of the dinosaurs . Buckyballs and buckytubes have been the subject of intense research, both for their unique chemistry and for their technological applications, especially in science, electronics, and nanotechnology. Carbon nanostructures can be coupled to antibodies and used in cancer therapies. When absorbed by cancer cells and exposed to light radiation, the reaction that creates reactive oxygen damages the DNA, proteins, and lipids that make up the cancer cell. This can lead to the reduction in size of a tumor (apoptosis). Once the light radiation treatment is finished the fullerene will reabsorb free radicals to prevent damage of other tissues. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kanzius
